About

Background:

Michael Deragon was raised in a small town in New Hampshire and spent his youthful days running in forests, swimming in any water he could find and playing as much make believe as he could. Being an only child and spending most of  his time alone he delved into books, the radio, building odd things, chasing balls, writing and drawing.

He attended a small college in New Hampshire (BFA English/Psychology) where he began playing in bands as a guitarist and spending days upon days in a library. He grew obsessed with jazz, psychedelic music, poetry, philosophy, magical realist literature, the art work of Picasso, Surrealism and Dada. While his bands played endless gigs he began making collages as show flyers and this quickly led him to seek out and find the collage world of the past. He fell in love with the works of Max Ernst, Joseph Cornell, Hannah Hoch, Romare Bearden, the paintings of Jean Michel Basquiat, Dorothea Tanning, Remedios Varo, Pablo Picasso, Eugene Delacroix, Goya and so many others.

After completing college he moved to the seacoast of New Hampshire and to his surprise fell in love with surfing...in blizzards, hurricanes and any time there was a bump in the water.  This love affair with the ocean changed everything and projected him into even deeper emotional and spiritual planes as well as landing for an extended stay in Costa Rica and eventually landing in Southern California.

During his late 20s the love of Surrealism and collage brought him to Goddard College for an MA in Surrealism/Writing (2005), During that time he pushed even harder into the collage realms and devouring everything he could about the DADA and Surrealist movement-from film to sound to poetry and all the visual landscapes they embarked upon. He loved the fragmented, the torn apart, the decay and use of the discarded to create something new, something unfamiliar and often uncomfortable.

In 2007 he finally needed more ocean and warmer climates and left for Los Angeles and completed a MFA from CALARTS in 2009 (Music and Poetry). Since then he has been scoring films (Moon Garden, Cold Brook etc), recording music as Heliochrysum and Michael Deragon, publishing poems, showing collages and working as a college professor (Poetry, Music, Art/Film History/Critical Studies).

Brief Artist Statement:

In my work I attempt to combine and transform the little things from our experience into something that makes us stop for a second and consider. I love that everything in our lives is constantly changing and that meaning is only created and not for certain. I believe the half forgotten-half remembered moments are so crucial and actually propel us so much more than the monumental ones. I believe that everything we overhear, consume, see, touch and feel teaches us. These elements speak to the Great Invisible beings within us and all around us.  In my work I combine the vibrant with the faded, the messy bits with the precise, the straight line with the torn up, the found with the crafted...always attempting to create a new sensation or a new way of seeing/feeling the world and always pushing outside the lines. I attempt always to create from a child like wonder as I listen visually to the materials that have chosen me.

I hope they bring something new to you and thank you for looking.
